Hell's kitchen, the cook off between Matsumoto and Ninomiya

Maybe Nino didn't need to extend his leg into the aisle just as Jun was carrying a vat of gravy to the oven, but really, what kind of cook would Nino be if he risked his leg falling asleep during such a crucial moment of the competition due to poor circulation?

Jo knows she doesn't have a chance, but that doesn't stop her from sneaking Dean a few looks and Dean/Cas

It's when he pulls up his sleeve to rake his nails over a mosquito bite - because, wow, that bicep, seriously - that Jo sees the handprint and the thumb that Dean absently smooths over the scar's raised edge.

Ace's new suit is too big in the shoulders ("I'll grow into it!"), so it gives Arsenal plenty of fabric to knot around his fist as Ace kisses him up against the bar.

"No, you won't," Arsenal says, because he's still annoyed that their first kiss happened in the middle of a shoot-out and got him shot in the shoulder.

After they've waited in silence for fifteen minutes, their waitress comes back with two bowls of soba and the check.

Takki takes a pair of disposable chopsticks from the basket between them and snaps them in half.

Subaru clears his throat, stands up, and leaves with the check.

Every person in the city seems to be standing still as George runs full-tilt toward Der Waffle Haus. The absence is behind her, lifting the lives from people's bodies as easily as fingers through a cobweb. In its wake rise blue ballet halls and blue bakeries and blue Broadway theaters, enough blue to cloak the continent.

She finds Rube sitting in their booth, reading a paperback over a plate of half-eaten scrambled eggs.

He smiles at her, crooked and resigned, and says, "Have a seat, peanut."

She slides into his side, and as the absence passes through Kiffany's still-warm coffee pot on their table, Rube begins to read aloud.

or: I Am Writing Pairings Other Than Yoko/Hina...Day

Thanks to one impulsive wish that he'd never been born, Mac's been forced to see some horrible things tonight: Ace's mangled arms, Arsenal's broken fingers, Gum's concave stomach, Toppo's rank apartment, Johnny's prison cell. So when Kennel says, "One more to go," Mac scowls and shuts his eyes. He's had enough. He won't watch whatever this nightmare is going to do to Jacky.

After a long stretch of silence, he asks, "Is it over yet?"

Kennel says nothing.

Mac opens his eyes to the familiar sight of The Eight in daylight, but Kennel is gone and Jacky is nowhere in sight.

Furious and cold, Mac leans across the bar and, even though he knows that this is probably still part of the nightmare and no one can hear him, he shouts, "Jacky!" and waits for an answer.

Around midnight, Shiori gets out of bed to go complain to someone about those two Johnnys making noise outside. One of them is almost shouting, and the other one - the one her daughter likes - sounds like a hyena giggling into a bullhorn. I promise you both, Shiori thinks as she scowls out the window at them, that if my daughter wakes up and finds out you're out there, she's going to want to kidnap you, and I'm going to let her try.

They immediately simmer down as if they can sense how serious she is, but she keeps watching, skeptical. Sure enough, ten seconds later the hyena snaps out of his meditative trance and pounds the ground with his beer bottle and makes the louder one squawk. Then they grin at each other.

Neither one of them says another word for a long, long time after that, so Shiori mutters, "Thank you," closes the blinds, and goes back to sleep.

Around midnight, a gray spider with legs longer than Yoko's fingers skitters out from underneath the porch of their inn and stops right next to Hina's bare foot. Yoko considers startling it to make it climb up Hina's leg, but Hina's in the middle of a yawn and he'll probably spill his sake if a spider crawls up his shorts, so Yoko passes up the opportunity and squashes the thing with his beer bottle instead.

Hina jerks his foot away and scowls at Yoko until he notices the splotch stuck to the bottom of the bottle. Then he quirks a grin, and Yoko shrugs with exaggerated modesty.
