THE EIGHT DAYS OF EITO

Day Five: What units would you like to see (that we haven’t seen before)? Give a top three.
Day Six: A member of another Johnny’s group joins Kanjani8 for a month. Who would you want it to be and why?

I was going to talk about Subaru's bisexuality but, well. Thanks for covering that already, awesomeface. XD

Oh, whatever, I'll talk about it anyway.

Given the nature of Johnnys as a career, I think a sizeable lot of them are at least bisexual, and Subaru's always struck me as such. It's not the fanservice–anyone can do that with enough confidence. It's the way he talks about people more than anything. Like Yasu, he strikes me as someone who's just attracted to people and their sex is incidental. (I also think Yasu's bisexual.)

So, basically, my impression is:

I'm not sure about Subaru, but I honestly, all tinhatting aside, do think Yasu's bi. Not necessarily in the way that he'd ever act on it, but...really, some stuff he's said, I just can't interpret any other way. (I've probably said this to you before, but I can never remember who I discuss things with.)

Someday, many years from now, Subaru needs to write a tell-all book and give us all the details about this and other things. XD My curiosity demands satisfaction.

This is tangential, but I've gotten the feeling from reading about Japan's entertainment world that there's a lot more flexibility for Japanese artists in their private lives (particularly Johnnys, given how Johnny has the media collared) than Western. I don't think I've ever heard of there being a gay scandal of any kind and yet some celebrities definitely are and I'd bet some aren't discreet if or when they act on it. ...This is like three conversations in one paragraph. XD Sorry. Rambling on the train. XD

Really? My impression has been that the media doesn't pry into the lives of Japanese celebrities as much as it does in the US and elsewhere, so in that sense they can get away with more. But on the other hand, if they are found out (in a way that Johnny can't crush), the consequences are bigger. But that's in general, not just for relationship stuff. Now that you mention it, I haven't heard of any sort of "_____ CAUGHT WITH A MAN" scandal, so...either people are really careful about that kind of stuff or those stories get hushed up more than others.

Right! That's what I mean. Like--in the States there are gossip rags everywhere. They're here too but they don't feel as prevalent. Also, I remember reading someone's take on Japanese fans and their general decorum around celebrities--how Japan is such a small country that running into a celebrity is likely and so people are more courteous. I don't know how true that is--especially of younger fans--but I suppose the same holds true for people generally? More respectful of privacy.

And I imagine Johnny is strict as hell with what's released about his talents. Like. I buy that Takki is not Jin and is far less promiscuous in his private life but there is NOTHING on him. There's one photo of him and a girl both fully dressed on a bed making V-signs at a camera Takki's holding. It doesn't get more vanilla than that. XDDD

I have heard some crazy fan stories (something about a HSJ boy having his cell phone stolen, for example), but fewer than you might expect. Though I'm not sure I buy that it's because Japan is a small country since Korean fans are INSANE.

He must be. I'm always kind of surprised that Jin and Ryo and whoever else it is who's into the club scene aren't constantly getting in trouble. I mean, I don't know (nor do I want to know) if they're doing anything particularly sketchy, but given that even being not-friends with a girl is frowned upon, you'd think they'd be all over the tabloids. I don't get it, but it's good, I guess. I much prefer not to know all the gory details of celebrities personal lives.

Yeah, I've heard of madness, but what I've actually seen for myself still surprises me. In 2008 when I was just visiting Osaka I saw this massive crowd of girls behind a kabuki theater and I thought, "Has to be Johnnys," so I walked over and one of the girls told me they were waiting for Tsubasa to leave the theater (this was the night before I managed to obtain a ticket for his solo con in the same theater). So I hung out with them, 'cos, y'know, XD, and I swear, I was amazed by the fan reaction when he finally appeared. No one moved. No one even took a photo, and I know that's verboten and all but it still surprised me that no one seemed to try it. No one yelled, no one tried to grab him. Just a few girls made these quiet squeals of glee. And these are his fangirls, not, like, people waiting for Takki. And he just opened the stage door, walked five feet between a parted Red Sea of fangirls, and jumped into an idling car that drove off as soon as he shut the door. It maybe doesn't sound that incredible, but it seemed like it at the time. XD Plus, my big music fandom before this was BSB when I was twelve, and chaos followed them wherever they went in some countries, including the States. XDDD

See, that's definitely part of why I assume there have been bigger scandals–Johnny just crushed them before they got out. I'm glad, though, too, because I don't want to know. XD Kame recently said something excellent when he explained why he doesn't use Twitter or social networking anything–he said it ruins the illusion, and that's what fuels their image. And I can say there are definitely some illusions I don't want removed.

(Now I want to do 5? Scandals Johnny Crushed. XD)

It seems like there are some crazies out there, just a much greater percentage of respectful fans who at least appear sane. XD I never fangirled an American band so I don't have much of a basis for comparison there, but I know a lot about kpop fans through fannish osmosis and...again, crazy. I don't know if you were around for that video where Yamapi got mobbed at the airport in Korea, but the contrast between that and Japan where Johnny's can ride the train like normal people was kind of shocking.

It's just weird because some scandals do come out and I always wonder what makes the difference. Obviously Johnny's scandal crushing powers only go so far... At any rate, I'm glad of them. I know some people who love to read rumors, and every time they try to talk to me about it I have to do the internet equivalent of covering my ears and going "Lalala!" XD

(That could be fun. Should I save my poking until after you finish your list? XD)

I honestly don't see many Johnny's as actually gay or bi. I feel like so many of them join because it's like the ultimate host club and they know girls will love them if they debut. I'm probably in the minority here.

I don't see Baru as anything but straight, but I'm not sure about Yasu. He seems much more open minded about everything and in touch with himself. I'd certainly like him to be gay or bi, but I guess it's hard to tell what they're really like when so much of what we see is designed to pull us in...

It's still fun to play "what if," though. :D

Eh, no one can know for sure. Seeming gay isn't being gay any more than seeming straight is being straight. *shrug* Ultimately all you can know 100% is yourself.
